Gym Lingo: What Does it Mean?

Whether you’re new to the gym or just now becoming truly interested in what everyone is talking about, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the things you may hear other “gym rats” say while working out.

  • Gym rat: Someone who is constantly at the gym and makes working out a major part of their personality.

  • HIIT: High Intensity Interval Training. Short bursts of intense training exercises followed by 10-15 seconds of rest.

  • BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate. The amount of energy expended while at rest in order to perform biological functions.

  • AMRAP: As Many Reps As Possible. AMRAP refers to one or few exercises you should perform as many times as possible in a given timeframe. An example of this is completing as many burpees as possible in five minutes.

  • EMOM: Every Minute on the Minute. An EMOM is when you are given an exercise to complete for a certain number of reps at the start of every new minute. An example of this is completing 10 push ups at minute 1 and resting until the next minute begins.

  • Bulking: Adding body weight by increasing the number of calories you intake. Bulking is the opposite of cutting.

  • Cutting: Reducing body weight. Cutting is the opposite of bulking.

  • Macros: Proteins, carbs and fats.

  • Micros: Vitamins and minerals.

  • Pre-workout: A supplement, usually including caffeine, to increase a person’s energy to complete a workout.

  • Superset: Two exercises performed back-to-back with little rest in between.

  • PR — or personal record: A maximum number of reps, weight lifted or time completed by a trainee.

  • Guns: Usually referring to to size of one’s bicep muscles.

  • Jacked: Referring to muscle mass and feeling large.

  • Rep — or repetition: One complete movement of an exercise. An example of this is completing 10 reps of squats in one set.

  • Set: A group of reps of a single exercise performed together. An example of this is completing four sets of 10 reps of squats, which totals out to 40 reps for 4 sets.
